World Book & Copyright Day 11th - 13th April 2018

National Library of Uganda (NLU) will join the rest of the World, in April 11th-13th in celebrating the “World Book and Copyright Day”

History of World Book and Copyright Day

World Book and Copyright Day, April 23rd, was declared by the UNESCO General Assembly in 1995.  It is the day set aside for the whole world to commemorate books and those who write them. Since then, it has been celebrated in different parts of the world by interested groups such as librarians, authors, teachers, school children, publishers, booksellers and the mass media. The day pays tribute to books and their authors and recognizes the important contribution that they make to the social and cultural progress of humanity, the recording of our history, cultural heritage and the maintenance of a reading culture. 

The NLU is the lead agency responsible for organizing the activities of the World Book and Copyright day in Uganda.  In collaboration with other book sector stakeholders, a number of activities are organized every year to commemorate the day.

The theme for this year’s celebrations is “Role of books in advocating for UN SDGS. This year a number of events activities have been organized for three days on 11th, 12th and 13th as follow

NLU urges all Ugandans of all age, particularly those in the book sector (Authors, Publishers, Readers and Educational institutions to always support and be part of the entire celebrations activities every year.
