readers programme

This is a project that is carried out in partnership with Book Aid International to provide book box libraries to primary schools and training teachers in bringing books closer to children in classrooms. With this project, children’s reading skills are improved which also improves their performance in school. Children also embrace a reading culture right from a young age when access to reading material is made easy for them.

Prior to the implementation of this project, there is usually a training of trainers workshop where librarians are trained and also expected to return to their respective districts to train teacher librarians on how to manage the libraries in their schools. During the first phase of the Inspiring Readers project, five schools were selected from each of the five (5) districts that were selected to participate namely; Kabale, Masaka, Mbale, Moroto and Jinja that were chosen for implementation of the project. Over 25,000 children’s books were received by NLU from Book Aid International to equip the school libraries. Funds were also made available by Book Aid International to purchase locally produced children’s books, cupboards and plastic boxes for the selected schools. NLU is currently working on the second phase of inspiring readers with five schools being selected from four (4) districts namely; Soroti, Lira, Paidha, Mubende and Nyarushanje community.
