For the past 15 years,NLU has been receiving books and other support from Book Aid International a UK charity. Currently, the NLU has also a partnership with Books Abroad which is also based in UK as well as The Nippon Foundation which is in Japan to distribute book donations in order to stock public and community libraries, school libraires as well as helping in supporting book promotion activities in the country.

Coordination of these donations involve staff of the National Library of Uganda in selecting books for the beneficiaries basing on their information requests. These are later stamped and packed for dispatch.

Beneficiaries are selected basing on reports from verification visits done by NLU staff. The visits are made to ascertain whether the applicant has the requirements for starting a library i.e. room, furniture, shelves, personnel, environment in which the library is going to be set up, etc. Also on these visits, the applicants are briefed on what is expected of them, and given advice on what needs to be done.
